This is my personal website, my creative portfolio with writing, photography, and various other pursuits. I am a writer, speaker, author, storyteller, marketer. I've studied documentary film making, radio production, sustainable design, french cooking, fiction writing, comedy improv, and stand up comedy. I've backpacked through 50+ countries, trained in mountaineering, camped in -61F while training for a polar expedition (that didn't happen), jumped out of a plane, dived the Great Barrier Reef, and had ten careers and counting. This site is to share a smattering of the things I created along the way.
My next adventure
The singular issue of our time is climate change. I fear we have broken the planet, and that we are approaching a time where fixing it may not be an option. My goal is to take whatever talents I have to promote the strategies, technologies, and people who are working to save the planet. The form is still taking shape, slowly but surely. Stay tuned.
My love for the planet and desire to explore the corners of it was seeded by books and stories, took root as I saw more of the world, and budded when I saw the area I grew up in ravaged by the impacts of climate change. Along with the usual suspects in the environmental movement (Al Gore, David Suzuki, Rachel Carson, leaders of amazing climate organizations at the UN), the business world (Richard Branson, Ray Anderson, Yvon Chouinard), and the architectural world (Bjark Engels, Renzo Piano, all sorts of pioneers in green building design and materials), my journey has been inspired by my partner, father, and family.
My father (center) spent the southern summer of 1958 as a surveyor measuring the depth of the icecap in the Antarctic. I didn't get to know him as he passed away when I was very young, but being raised among pictures and stories of his adventures inspired my own curiosity about the world.
My better half is creative, smart, curious, and committed. He's a designer at heart, an aerospace engineer by training, and a green technology entrepreneur by vocation. He's got 100x more patience than me. He's kind to dogs and small kids gravitate to him. He makes me laugh in a way no one else does.
My mother, Donna, is a creative tour de force, with needle, pen or garden trowel. My stepfather Ed taught me to see the bones of a house and to swing a hammer. My older brother Ian and his wife Jane work to save ocean life, and my younger brother Michael and his wife Elaine shape new generations of green warriors.
